Methinks that this is actually the tip of the iceberg, given that anything in the BIOS can effectively "root" the machine before any possible antivirus can stop it.
Imagine something like this in all the new PCs belonging to a major bank or financial house, slowly gathering data until it is triggered by an external command.

....Definitely not the first time this has happened. I can't find which company but I believe it was Compaq (before it was bought by HP) shipped with a bug in it's CMOS & there has been numerous times that hard drive manufacturers have had their product shipped with hidden treasures. Mostly this is singular incidents by dissatisfied employees but occasionally I would not be surprised if it wasn't pro-level corp. sabotage.
