Just curious if anyone has any information on Van de Graaf split-core voltage multipliers???
I've been told that this topology is one of the most efficient for generating high voltages. I have some brief information on these, but other than, information is scarce. I may try to search the IEEE archives to find something as well.

Don't know if it's related;
in the 70's at Harwell we had a particle accelerator (in a very tall slim building) that charged particles by (I think) a positive VDG which accelerated towads a 'grid' where the charge was reversed and the particle accelerated to a second +ve target. I think it was a 'Tandem Accelerator"

I don't think its related.
A VDG split-core multiplier has little to do with the electrostatic generator of the same name and is actually comprised of an energized split core with several stacks of secondary windings divided by insulated gaps in the core (hence split core).
i have a scan of a block diagram - i'll have to post it. looks pretty interesting.

The split-core voltage multiplier designed by Van de Graaff is also known as the insulating core transformer (ICT). An article that contains a small section on the insulating core transformer may be found here under the title of DC Accelerators by E. Cottereau.
I would be interested in any additional information or sources that you may find concerning the topic.
