Last year I made my first Tesla Coil, and after creating a plasma speaker out of a Flyback transformer and TL494 PWM, i wanted to create a sing tesla coil. I have a tcp555 PWM driving a td351 IGBT/MOSFET driver, which i have connected to a single MOSFET. I have a rectified and capacitor filtered Variac attached straight to the primary, which is then attached to the collector of the MOSFET, while emitter is grounded.The coil maxes out at 2kv at an input of 15v from the Variac. Past 25v, both the signal of the PWM and the coil go crazy, and drops to about 1kv. I measured the signal across the primary and it jumps up toward to a peak of 150v in resonance with the secondary's negative 2kv peak. So I'm thinking that the spike is affecting the MOSFET and PWM at higher voltages. Would a half bridge or full bridge circuit fix this problem? I have tried 2 different transistors, 2 different IBGTs, and 3 different MOSFETS to try and fix it, but regardless, the signal always goes haywire soon after reaching 2kv. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, as i am an aspiring electrical engineer at UVM, and I am quite under-experienced.
