I may have underestimated my strength when I was screwing the terminals of the IGBT in, I seem to not be able to rest until all those philips heads are all lined up and facing the same way, "+++++" so I may have cranked the thing too hard,

the end result was in the image shown, I cracked a small piece of the material of the package, this was only a wall, I did not go past the epoxy cover, or exposed any part of the semiconductor, and Ive testing this IGBT, and it still works.

the question is, am I worried about nothing? or is this gonna bite me in the ass later down the road?
(also, the connection shown is the collector)

I just cried a little. There was a little laughing as well...

It should be fine if nothing is exposed. I have one that was damaged in a very similar way from dropping it on concrete. As long as nothing is exposed it should be fine. (The MOSFET is still in service.)

well, what about exess heating of that lead? the material sorounded it Ive noticed to disapate heat quite well, could this become an issue? (personally i dont think it will, im going to run pretty low duty through this bridge, and my 1/8 thick copper buss seems to disapate heat also well, so it will probably also act as a heatsink for that thin IGBT collector lead?

well, I think its no issue now anyway, just a cosmetic defect.

It'll be fine, those packages are an awful design with their captive nut. It's asking for it. At work, we've sent equipment out that has nearly all of them cracked cheesey

I did the same mistake the first time I tried to screwing the terminals of similar IGBTs... angry
My intent was minimizing contact resistances...

Anyway, as long as the crack is limited to the zone around the nut without involving the body, it should be fine...

Luca

Well, after this little mishap, ive charged up the gate and tested the IGBT bascily, so far it works just as before with no issues. so I think it really shouldn't be an issue

Thank you everyone.

That's so funny to me. I usually break and strip stuff all the time. My problem is I am always after "super tight"... I really should get a torque wrench...

Anyhow, it's been quite a while since I serviced my half bridge of 60N60's... Sure enough, last time I serviced it, I shattered the ceramic also. LOL. Anyhow, I push this bridge past 500 amps all the time, and it's been operating "cracked up" for months. Hehehehe

Here's how "my" cracked guy runs : Link2

Thats awsome Boozer, (nice miller in the background too! cheesey )
my IGBTs are well, 200GT60s, so hopefully ill be able to push a godload of amps through em as well. (im aiming 800 through em for now)
