Hello everyone,

Link2

in this thread, you can see how some users, such as "streamers rule"
have "guest" writen underneath them.
does this mean that they are not registered members?
how can they post?
I dont really know much about the forum system.
so my question being, what kind of account is that?

Awhile back, guests without registered profiles where allowed to post. I was never here for that.

As you can see, Chris took that feature off, i am guessing because it allowed people with little knowledge about what 4hv is for, reply on threads. I can definitely see how that could be a problem! amazed

People have never been able to post without registering. The reason some people show up as "guest" is that their profiles have since been deleted. This can happen either by request, or when someone gets banned. Note that not everyone who gets banned has their profile deleted -- some are simply marked as banned. It depends on the circumstances surrounding the ban.

If their profile is deleted, how come thier posts remain?
there is something in each of our profiles known as user posts, is this directly related to our profile? or is it part of the forum?

It's a bit more complicated than that. Each person who is currently registered has a profile. Profiles are stored in one of the site's database tables. There's also another database table called "posts," where everyone's posts are stored. The individual database entries for each post contain the post itself, information such as the time the post was made, which thread the post belongs to, and only two pieces of information about who made the post: the user ID number, and the user name.

When the site later renders a thread, it pulls up all the posts for that thread. Then it pulls up the user information for each person who posted, so things like a user's ranking, real name, and avatar can be displayed. If the lookup of the user ID fails, no information can be retrieved, so it fails gracefully and labels the person a "guest." It's a bit misleading, because no guests can post here, but the forum software doesn't know that. A more correct way to display it would be "profile missing," but then it looks more like an error, when it is not.
