Materials to avoid with plasma

I think your best bet would be some fire hardened clay, you can buy the stuff at a craft store. Just make the thing and take it to a local school; then ask someone if they can put it in the kil with the art class's projects. $5 or some food doesn't hurt either.

Now I'm making a chamber thing as discussed here: Link2 So I'm going to have the arc inside a plaster chamber, do you think that would work?
And since the arc is in a chamber do you think I would have to worry about a plastic horn getting melted?

I'm not sure it would work. Gypsum plaster tends to crack when exposed to high heat and it's also not a good insulator since it absorbs water like a sponge. Your best bet would be fire hardened clay covered with clear glaze.

The only substances to avoid with plasmas are those which decompose violently when their rate of rise of temperature is too fast,. This was an issue, and there is a IEEE paper back in the 50's
concerning some switchgear failures.

Probably not an issue with experimenters with low energy sources of power.

Thanks, My Plasma speaker is still a while away so don't expect to see anything soon. I would like to avoid using clay since it changes size and shape when glazed and fired making it difficult to get the electrodes to fit as Patrick found out with his insulators for his capacitive hv probe wink
But I might consider it, my school probably has a kiln

@radiotech: I'll have a look for that paper

How about carving up a block of talcum like Mates did? But then I might have so difficulties getting a block of talcum =/


Any more suggestions?

Clay does shrink 10% when it's fired, but clay can also be drilled with a dremel. Why not just put the electrode holes in afterward? It doesn't lose it's shape if you fire it right. A block of talcum will cost a lot more than a lump of clay too.

You could also just make the holes in the clay twice as big as you need them, then use plaster or high temp glue to hold in the electrodes.
