Ok, I see exactly what you are saying now.
I guess I assumed earlier that the field outside the coil would have lines of flux that run parallel to the coils axis. If this was true then option 1 and 2 are equal. However, there will always be some curvature in the flux lines, and this curvature makes the lines move through some loops on the option 1 board. (and as someone said earlier, it gets worse as one moves further away from the board's center for option 1)
