The 10k ohm resistors don't have to be 2w. I used 1/4w and they're fine. But I'd use at least 5w 470 ohm resistors. Mine are 5w and they get hot at 40v.

I know. but its what i had on hand. my 470ohm ones get only warm. but Ive only run it at 30v it died at 50v but because it short circuited.

Both??? >.<

Okay i used...

2 x IRFP250 - Link2
2 x Ultrafast diodes STTH1R04 - Link2
2 x 15v 5W Zeners 1N5352BG - Link2
1 x 680nf 850v MKP capacitor PP - Link2
And the resistors were just stated values of 470ohm and 10k, both of them were 2W and the inductor was one i pulled off an inverter microwave board. smile
Thanks!
I guess I'll get those, some resistors and this Link2 inductor.

Wish me luck!

hi

irf530 for transistors? whats the max power of the driver with these?
my driver is built with these cheap transistors and the output arc can be seen here
The power supply is 24v. And the 10k resistors can be under 2w. My capacitor is 0.68 uF wima red color.

bgsniper-

Please use a better device for handling the wires carrying the output!

Tools like your pliers give a false sense of security, as the handles are just metal coated with plastic. Your body is effectively only millimeters away from that high potential...
Given enough time it will eat through that insulation. It happened to me, but I was only working with a couple mA at most, so it was just a tingle... but a nip from that device of yours will be more than a tingle!

Good results, though.

Finally ordered the parts and finished building it. I ened up winding my own inductor and some SuperFETs that were on sale. My highest voltage source at the moment is 12v. Hopefully I'll be able to get something better soon and get bigger sparks!
