Most of the materials can be obtained from discarded CRT monitors. At least a perforated board to make a solid assembly is a must. "Floating" assemblies are an invitation to wrong connections and wires touching (and consequent smoke).

Just don't make the mistake that I did and try to use a breadboard to test your circuit. I had never seen a breadboard produce so much smoke until then...

There's simply too much current for a breadboard to handle. But I came up with an idea that worked rather well.

What I used was the aluminum tape that many use to make a TC Toroid with. I took a perfboarf (that was just a stripped Ethernet card) and cut out my little PC-board design with the tape (made it much thicker than a profession trace however) and soldered it up. It worked quite well. When I completed it and all was working - I covered it with clear lacquer. That way it was compact and the heat-sink could be attached via small screws.

I might just try that idea, thanks

You can solder copper tape. Aluminum tape is very difficult to solder.

At the hardware store.

For other widths, better adhesives, etc. go to electronics parts dealers.

That's quite a find.
I had to use a flux called "Ruby Fluid" (it's excellent to soldiering nichrome wire as well) to get clean soldier joints. But then it's smart to clean it up afterward as I'm fairly sure it's acidic.

I'm going to get some of that copper tape because without a doubt, making a clean little board is much better than having wires all over the place. I went though that and will not repeat it. All it does is help you build a scatological vocabulary.
