Okay, so heres the idea. Build a small SSTC (or similar HV generator) that will fit inside an existing ZIPPO lighter, turn on when you flip the lid over, and have enough power to light a cigar. Fitting inside means everything - batteries, control electronics, transformers, etc...

An idea . . .or perhaps even a challenge ! smile

I believe it can be done:

I'm sure it could be possible to make such a small one...or at least a high voltage transformer that can fit inside it, I was messing with a scanner HV inverter, 12V making just over 1cm arcs, had fun lighting paper and plastic on fire.

So i see it possible if you can do a simple high voltage arc, but a tesla coil? :P

Doesn't have to be a Tesla coil. Any HV source is fine.
Definitely be an interesting project . . .

Ideally you'd want a corona only discharge (from desoldering Litz or something, need lots of discharge sites to get reasonable energy output). Just drawing an arc to the lid is a bit boring. Which means a ~100 ns pulse.

Touche'.

But, i will attempt to actually make one of those 'cool' projects.

My idea is, have the secondary wound around a piece of cardboard that is the shape of the lighter and fits snugly inside, and a primary on the inside of the secondary. I have an 11 amp SMD device, a TTSOP 74hc14 to use, some SMD caps for shunt (class E). The supply for the 74hc14 can just use a zener and a few passives.

But the problem is the battery... Is it alright to use a supercap instead? In other words, how many lights should you get per charge? I mean, if you where to professionally produce the lighter, you could have custom made parts to take advantage of all area possible...

And the ground can be the metal jacket of the lighter (provided the lighter is metal, otherwise some capacitive coupling or somesuch could be used)...

Or allow the supply to be external, and i will break out the pencil toobz.

Are there (cheap) supercaps which can do 10 amps for say 10ms pulses with 10% duty cycle?

PS. what is an arc discharge capable of lighting a cigarette going to do to skin?

A Cellphone Lion battery would be half the volume of a lighter. The coil could be wound around the lighter ensheathed in a plastic ferrite matrix designed to boost the Q while insulating it. This would double as a charger pickup coil. To light up the smoke, the thing is driven into oscillation.

Accessory tips could be marketed that converts the lighter into defibulator to be used by heavy smokers with chronic hear disease.

This lighter would be more popular than the one invented that employed cold fusion and Brown's gas.
