I've acquired a couple of flybacks, one from a monitor and another from color TV. They both have these metal clips holding the two core pieces together.
My concern is arcing to the clip during operation. Mostly from the pins to the primary coil.
Do you guys usually remove the clip and if you do, what do you put in place?

Usually the clip is not to be removed at all. There are even some models that have a small metal plate with solderable pins to connect the core assembly to ground. In most cases, the resin cup has a cylinder that isolates the core from anything else. Only then can minute currents creep toward the core and let it float. The core material itself is often conducting at higher voltages so there is really no reason to remove the bracket holding the core halves together.

The voltage on the primary coil is not high (at most hundreds of volts), and the insulation of the wire used in the coil is enough to prevent any arcing.
