Hello, i am trying to make a simple high speed photography setup whereas i have my camera set to a long exposure in the dark. then have a flash initiated for a breif moment to illuminate the image i want to capture. but since it was a awake at 2am, try it for the sake of it idea. i just had a disposable camera with a switch to set of the flash, and a digital camera on a 30 second exposure, and went i dropped something or whatever, i pressed the button at the same time and caught it on camera. but i was thinking with a sound activated switch to control the flash, the flash would just go off as the action happened, so i thought id buy a sound activated switch, but just asking for reference which one would be better for this purpose? FK409 or FK408 Link2
If its a stupid idea let me know.. lol

I'd vote for the 408 since the 409 needs a 2nd sound event to turn it off.

You can have lots of fun with a microphone-activated flash trigger.
[edit] I think the kits you cited will work, with a minimum delay caused by the mechanical relay.
This site has a wealth of practical information, and very inexpensive kits for DIY flash photography: Link2

Long ago I made a sound-operated flash trigger using a small hot-cathode thyratron. It replaced the second tube in an AM-radio-transmitter kit project from high school electronics class (which was pretty retro in the early 1970's, but still favored by good old Mr. Newell).

You could also use a triac instead of a relay. The delay time would be a lot lower and so the timing would be a bit easier... I guess. A SCR should also be fine.

I just use a Piezo Element with a potentiometer to adjust sensitivity that triggers an SCR, cheap easy and effective.
Of course, that works better for more sharp sounds but my waterballons always worked!

I did this once, using a cheap audio triggered strobe (Amazingly fast considering!), an Arduino, a solar cell and a laser. Shine the laser onto the solar cell, connect a potentiometer to the Arduino, and adjust so that the strobe triggers when the beam is broken!

Would have worked much better if I had of kept the strobe out of the image, and used a lower powered laser, but pretty good for 1st try! :)

Maybe an IR beam instead?

I could use 1064nm, that shouldn't show up on camera, but anything below that will probably show up a bit as well ...

Well i only have a 2 mega pixel phone camera at the moment, and my setup was a voice activated switch triggering a disposable camera's flash... but it works, here are some pic's
and if you look closely you will see the microphone in some of the photo's
