Hi all,
Just thought i'd let you know that there was some sort of odd RF propagation conditions this evening...
Driving home from work (Newcastle UK) I picked up three FM broadcast stations from Italy by accident on the car radio! They were clearer than several of the more distant regional broadcast stations only 60 miles away! Two of the stations were so strong that they came through in stereo and the RDS Station Ident even came up on the display.
The stations were: "R 101" received on 87.9 and 107.9 Mhz, and another Italian station that seemed to go by the name of "Virgin" I'm not sure if Italy has the equivalent of our Virgin Radio? Seemed to be mostly rock music. Also picked up something called "Capital" on 87.7 MHz but I'm not good at identifying languages! Was also something playing Banghra music on 98.8 right next to BBC Radio1 on 98.9 but might be a local station for Asian community or a UK pirate?
I'm amazed that a basic car stereo with a tiny whip antenna was able to pick these up with RDS, whilst struggling to receive the local RSL stations just down the road! Radio propagation can be a strange beast it seems.

There was a considerable 6 meter Sporadic E opening (50MHz) on Wednesday in the US. Stations in Georgia were working stations in New England, about 1200 miles away. 100Mhz is pretty high for sporadic E propagation, particularly at this point in the solar cycle, but it isn't out of the question. Tropospheric Ducting is also a possibility, though a quick run through a Great Circle Route calculator says London to Rome is about 875 miles. That's not unheard of, but it is rather exceptional.
So either you heard some really impressive Sporadic E, or some really impressive Tropospheric Ducting. Either way, definitely not a common occurrence.
