I like very much grounding my Tesla coil on the earth of the net. It is a very common coil, with a neon transformer with one side of the 5KV, 30 mA on earth.
Can I risk that without any danger?

Sorry for the language, my Dutch is better than my English! smile

Do you mean Earth GND from your power outlet?
For a 5kV, 30mA you are probably okay using the earth ground from the outlet. However, anytime you hook up a Tesla coil to your outlet ground, there is always risk.

Yes, ground neon transformer and secondary coil on ground from the net.
Should a net filter reduce the danger?

A filter isn't going to reduce the danger by much. The main problem with using mains ground is the long length of wire going trough your house. This will work as an antenna and give lots of interference that might damage other devices. The smaller the coil the less interference.

I'd go with a proper RF ground in your garden, way less risk. And you'll eventually need it when you want bigger coils. and Trust me you will want to build bigger.

Ps I'm Dutch too so if you want to ask anything in Dutch do so via a PM

So it is impossible to demonstrate a Tesla coil in a safe way in different buildings just using the ground from the main outlet? Even with that small power (150 Watt).

I run 2 coils (1200VA each) on the same circuit and house GND all the time in my garage, you just have to be careful that you don't have any sensitive electronics on the same circuit (computers, TVs, radios, garage door openers, etc...)

If you are running a very small coil, the risk is minimal if running of mains ground. I had a small portable 4kV,38mA coil at one time that i plugged in practically everywhere including sharing the same power outlet strip that computers were plugged into.

Can you still damage equipment? Sure, there is always a slight risk. But for something low powered like that, the risk is very small.

Thank you, now I am more confident... Next week first experiment! I'll be back (if my wife don't kill me)!
