Personally I tend to use the USB boot loader code for the 18f series now.
1.) Program once with your i/o and clock settings and bootloader code. 2.) Run USB loader application (free) 3.) Insert device to usb bus. 4.) Program 5.) Remove device. 6.) Repeat 3.) as needed as a programmer is no longer needed.
They sell kits/programmers on ebay or the Microchip OEM site for cheap.

Hi,
I built mine for virtually no cost apart from a single ZIF socket, based around the JDM programmer with one of my hacks (2N3819+external regulator to switch VPP)
You're better off going for the 3182 from Quasar Electronics as its USB compatible (meaning it will work with any machine irrespective of parallel/serial port voltage weirdness).
Also, you have to be very careful not to fry your PICs by using a badly designed serial port programmer that applies -V voltages at any time during programming.. learned that the hard way.
