Isolation Transformer

Hello

Does anyone here know where I can get an isolation transformer for under $40 (inc. P/H) but more preferably under $20? I got 50 X1 caps and 50 diodes to make a CW multiplier but isolation transformers look a bit expensive =S. Should I make my own isolation transformer? or maybe not use one...maybe?

You could use two standard transformers back-to-back,
e.g.
240:12 connect to 12:240
the available output power will be a little less than the lower power transformer.
You don't need much power so 10 to 50 VA is adequate.

OR

you can run directly off the line/mains,
initially use a 240 Vac lamp in series with the input for testing.
You can run directly from the main supply because;
Neutral is near to earth/ground potential
You are not going to be in contact with the output
You have a high value resistor from the output to protect the diodes during discharge.
I did this with 30 10nF ceramic disk caps and 30 1N4007 diodes, works ok.

So I can:

A. Use back to back transformers, since little power is needed 10-50VA

B. Put an incandesant in series with the mains input, not touch the output and put a high value (high voltage?) resistor in series with the output?

What value should the resistor be? I've already looked through the sites and they don't have much on safety neutral

Some more info on my components:
Link2 CAPACITOR, X1/Y1 470PF 250VAC (I thought it was 100nF angry )
Link2 DIODE, 1N4007G, 1000V 1A

Now, I haven't tried this, but how about rewinding a MOT? That is, remove the shunts and the secondary and replace the secondary with an equal amount of turns to the primary. Have you guys tried that and if so how much power were you able to pull through before going into saturation?
