Coin Shrinking and voltage?

Ultra fast question here. If I were to make a coin shrinker, would 1400V or 1800V be sufficient enough at 6kJ? Like wise would this voltage and energy be sufficient for a rail gun?
Basically I want to make a surge generator, fully digital and what not, that can be used for multiple applications.

first, we need more info , the coil dimensoins and such, its current doing the squeezing work, not voltage. so will 1400 to 1800 volts be enough?

answer = maybe. capacitence at 6kJ / 1400 v = amps, restricted by R*L*C
though most people do this at 10-24kv (and some crazy guy has a 45kv one!)
i have never seen anyone successful at less than 6kv, at maybe 20-100 kAmps
if you can generate 20-100 kamps at 1800v then your good, if not your screwed

its been awhile since ive done this trick, but there are web sites that go over this in detail. you need to be sure of your safety, waqtch you tube, its explosive and DEAFENING!

as for a rail gun , i dont know, but wish had one. cheesey

Thats a good question, I actually never noticed that till now.
I come here on and off again, however, I'll probably be talking more since I finally landed a job and graduated college. I have a ton more time without school.

My issue is that I want everything to be solid state, hence, use SCR's. I understand that 1kV is pretty low and I won't get as high of a peak current. I guess I can just make a smaller solid state one for messing around. Also using a high voltage would lower the RC time constant (more voltage and less capacitance at 6kJ). Dang I was hoping that this wouldn't be the answer. I don't see how I could get 20kA at 1.8kV, I would need really good conductors.

I guess this answers the rail gun question too. However, I could have sworn someone had success at 800V some where.

Question, assuming I do make a high voltage one, has anyone had success with a triggered spark gap, like how flashes work on cameras? Or are solenoid based triggering better?

look at sam barros website at powerlabs.org, he uses 4kv at 5000uF he has one of the best designs ive seen yet.
