Flyback output measurement

Hey wassup guys,

I want to measure the output of my flyback so I can know the voltage and the frequency of it. Do you guys have any idea ?

The frequency of the output is the frequency of whatever you put into it...

Voltage is a little trickier. Most people just guesstimate based on arc length.

Assuming yours is a DC LOPT: Use a 1000:1 voltage divider and measure the voltage across the tail resistor. If you use a 1G resistor in series with a 1M resistor, you'll need to increase the 1M resistor to 1M11 to take into account shunting by the (typically) 10M input impedance of your DVM. i.e. 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 = 1/10M + 1/1M11

If it is an AC LOPT, you need first to rectify it with a half wave rectifier and a capacitor in order to measure the unloaded peak output voltage.

It is easiest to measure the frequency of a LOPT on the low voltage side at whatever oscillator or frequency generator drives it. Take care that your frequency counter can handle the voltage spikes that can and do appear in driver circuits.

I use a High Voltage Probe, on eBay they show up often and occasionally you can usually score one for cheap. I got one rated for up to 35 kV for $30

you can build one like Proud Mary describes (and it is a thing worth building yourself) but do take caution that there can be arcing between resistors so pot them or submerge them in oil and keep all of your solder joints in it as round as possible.

The probe ideas are neat, but you may even be able to use the internal focus/screen resistor given you got a DC LOPT:

If the focus e.t.c. return pin is available(a pin outside the circle made by the other pins) put a big resistor (around 100 KOhm - 1 MOhm) in series with it and ground and measure the voltage over it

If not, you may be able to use the screen output instead (usually the thinnest wire leaving the LOPT) and some resistor toward ground.

Note: You may need to buffer the voltage signal due to high impedance when using a low impedance meter (like the needle kind).
