Hi I

Im Newton Brawn, Just arriving to 4hv.org ! Congratulation for all forum organizers and people like me looking 4 inertchanging information!

I have assembled the arc starter circuit with a light dimmer. It is working very well with a stick welder (buzz box).

Very usefull when welding low currents from 10 to 70A.

IT SHOULD BE NOTED that the schematic drawing in the first post (GREENBUGGY) shall be correct to work properly. The 500uuF cap shall be in series with the tesla coil, not in parallel.
Im my assemble the door knob cap was replaced with a homemade glass cap 600uuF, 15kV peak.
The automobile ignition coil also was replaced with homemade pulse transformer. From a old tv (found in the street) flyback ferrite "C" core, was rewinded with 12-24 turns 24AWG primary / 600turns #28WG secondary, isolation 2x 0.1mm poly film between layers.

Actually the supply is 230 V ac, not 120V ac as initially proposed.

The 3uF cap also was replace by 0.95 uF from old microwave oven found in street...

The commercial dimmer that I could found here was rated 120V 600W, it have worked for more than 3 years. Them I was ashamed with my abuse in the dimmer, so I replaced the dimmer triac with another one rated 600V 25A.

The 4 tungsteniun gaps replaced with only 3, made with scraped tungsteniun carbite inserts. These inserts are from lathe cutting tools. No heat sink in the carbite gaps.

I have made other small changes.

Newton in the post above yours I made note that the casano diagram is wrong.

I have since ditched the automotive ignition coil in lieu of a hotsy ignition transformer (not entirely unlike the ones used to start fuel oil furnaces). Eventually the hotsy's going to want its parts back so I plan on getting an NST to dedicate to this project soon.

I am curious, looking at some of the NST's on ebay vs. my existing fuel oil ignition transformer (which is 10kv @ 23 mA) if I will get a longer arc jump at the torch by going to a higher voltage, or higher amperage NST? Most NST's seem to deliver 30-45 or more mA regardless of their KV rating

The setup does work presently and easily jumps 1/8" or more gap from torch to workpiece. I have been meaning to transfer this setup from the workbench to a dedicated box but haven't found the time, also haven't used it much since this summer (hard to float canoes in snow)

Anyone? I haven't checked this thread in a while and just saw that the forum regressed a week due to a server hd failure.
