Look for a 1W or above c-mount diode on eBay or something. They usually come in the 808nm wavelength, and powers above 1W should cut thru cardboard easily. You don't want a CO2 laser for cardboard, you'd just set it on fire unless your table could move extremely fast. Only problem with c-mount laser diodes, is they tend to be a pain to collimate. Just check that it has a FAC (Fast axis correction) on the die, otherwise you will end up with a bar more than a dot/square.

have two 1W 808nm diodes here (one tested, the other isn't)

unfortunately the modules I have don't fit the diodes.

Wow, thanks to everyone who replied. I think the best prospect here is a 1 or 2 watt cmount. It seems after housing, cooling and optics are accounted for though I'll wind up spending 1 or 2 hundred dollars. I'll probably go this route in a few months when I'm not completely broke. In the meantime, if I see a junk blu ray/dvd burner for a few dollars I'll pick it up. It won't work well for my application but I can at least get a feel for the system.
On a side note, I looked at CO2 lasers at sams faq. Specifically home built heads. I've already built an N2 head so maybe I'll try a transverse CO2 head one day. That'll be a project in and of itself though.

I have optics for a TO-3 laser module here. The 6W diode died unfortunately. If you can find a TO-3 module I'll send you the optics for postage costs.

Would these happen to be the hard-to-use multimode 1W IR laser diodes on ebay that fit into the AIXIZ modules? LPF has been going on for months trying to get this laser into a solid point. Since its a Multimode diode, it's been rather hard even with FAC lens. Once they figure it, I'm buying one for engraving :D
