SSTC's of all kinds are tricky, the DR's more so. I would suggest going ahead with a mid-sized sstc to start. The modulation is fairly straightforward as I recall...

Well you can choose build a SSTC have a somewhat smaller output and better sound. Or build a DRSSTC and have the sparks coming out of your switching devices. Learn from you SSTC mistakes then go for DRSSTC.

I'd recommend an SSTC also or even a flyback modulated with a 555 timer - pretty simple stuff.
Plus, you'll probably enjoy it more than a DRSSTC using PRF modulation which in my opinion sounds like a "Kazoo on Steroids" and gets pretty old REALLY fast.

My SSTC II is Steve Wards SSTC5 with a fullbridge of MOSFETs, it will give you longer sparks compared to the original halfbridge as the primary coil sees a larger voltage.
