Hey guys,

I've always tinkered with electronics and projects; everything I've done has been by myself from books and theory. I just finished my Masters in EE, and I feel I have a modest working knowledge of this field.

However, even till now, I haven't met anybody else who enjoys this hobby. I also think that because of this, I haven't learned as much as I would have liked to up till this point. I work for the govt (out of Rhode Island) for 4 years now, and everybody here does zero design work and has no ambition to anything but get through the day.

Where's the local community, or is there even one? What am I missing?

Thanks.

It isn't easy, in my case I know only of two other individuals that work seriously with the high voltage hobby in Denmark, and they are unfortunately, in Danish terms, far away from me :)

People who truly enjoy electronics are pretty rare. Try your local ham radio club as a starting point.

If you don't live in a reasonable sized city, you may be the only one in the area with what the Dilbert cartoons called "The Knack". If you really feel lonely, move to Silicon Valley, MIT or somewhere.

Hi Nathan, I agree that there's not that many people interested in electronics as a hobby, I work alongside over 30 other electronics trained personnel and only 4 or 5 of us have electronics as an active hobby.
My fellow amateur radio club members likewise have very little interest in electronics as such !

I must admit that although electronics is my hobby and there are many members of this forum that live not too far away (UK is a geographically small place) I'm too lazy to get off my bum and go to events etc...my loss.

Totally know what you mean. I do not know a single other person even slightly interested in electronics what so ever... If anyone knows of any "get to gethers" or events in california that might be hapening in the near future, I would be happy to know about them.

Well then here's a follow-up question...

I feel that a lot of the electronics work that I do is because I don't feel fulfilled at work, or at least, wish that I could be a designer instead of whatever else the Navy makes me do. I'm in the wrong area for those types of jobs, but then again, for those who DO have design jobs; is that the source of fulfillment for you? Like I said, I'm done with my masters, and then I come here and am a complete novice :)

Is the same here. Our techcenter for electronics / electrical, my teacher said he has never seen anyone come by that does high voltage or electronics as a true every day hobby. Over 8 different schools in West Michigan go to this techcenter. There's people who WANTED to make a ladder (as he showed us one) but they are the same people that want to make a little spinning circle of magnet wire above a magnet. Meaning, Their interest isn't in the HV, its just something different.

I'm the only one that I'm aware of, in all of West Michigan, that does High Voltage. I dont mind it as it's fun to show off, but still, would be nice to have someone to compare thoughts with in person.
