I find this very coincidental. Medical issues on an airplane are not that common; certainly they are less frequent with a 23 year old. THen, one needs to ask what is the likelihood that MJ's doctor just happens to be on that plane.

I believe this was staged.

Actually, medical issues on planes are fairly common. Whats uncommon is that a "celebrity" doctor was involved which is why it got press to begin with. Not to mention, unless their is "leak" (which would be common in a celebrity case), HIPAA prevents airlines from reporting incidents such as this publicly.

A better question to ask is if MJ's doctor is legally allowed to provide any medical assistance to begin with. It is my understanding his medical license has been suspended.

even if one no longer has a medical license, in an emergency it is actually illegal to prevent someone from helping if they can, unless you live in California where they managed to pass a law allowing one to sue someone for providing medical help who is not licensed if they fail, but that is something I heard about California as I've never read their statutes but being the backwards state it is in many ways I would not be surprised. I know that California prohibits one from using an out of state Doctor for providing medical supplies, so if I went there and needed prescriptions I would have to find a new doctor.

Is it a coincidence that I was just talking to my neighbour (a doctor) who mentioned that she had an interesting day; she was the first on the scene at a motorbike crash and helped the guy.
Coincidences really do happen.
Incidentally how much would they have to pay you to have a medical emergency where the only treatment available was from that particular Dr?

Kidding aside, he's probably not a bad doctor in a pinch. Seems to me that he just let himself be kowtowed by an assertive patient, and administered too much of a medicine that he knew had risks. I'd let him treat me, but I'd probably double-check the dosing on any prescribed medications.

In Australia, "good samaritan" legislation requires that a qualified medical practitioner render assistance, but only within his capabilities and training. It also protects the Dr from litigation if what he has done is reasonable (even if outcome is bad).
Presumably only applies in Australian airspace.
There is no expectation of a fee in a good samaritan act but airlines commonly give a complementary flight upgrade to business class on that or subsequent flights.

My last good samaritan act occurred when cycling home at 1am (I don't own a car) when a road train (32 wheeler) passed me on the highway and almost immediately locked up it's brakes in a fearsome display of smoke and noise. It had struck a drunk kid riding a bike, weaving on the wrong side of the lane without (compulsory) helmet or lights. This occurred in a 100kph zone in a semirural road well beyond street lights. These guys don't stop for kangaroos which are a common road hazard (usually see 2-4 of them each night).
I stopped and found the kid twisted in the wreck of his bike and wearing a backpack (with smashed Bacardi rum bottle in it).
I thought that he had zero survival chance and didn't attempt resus initially as no resps, pulse, but eventually he made a repiratory grunt. I tore his backpack off (not sure how I did that) and got him out flat. Amazingly, no major deformities from fractures. Only a minute or two after this (amazingly number two) a volunteer ambulance returning from a distant town stopped and I got him into the ambulance ASAP and bagged him on the way to the hospital 5 mins away.
He survived after a month in hospital with pelvic fractures, subdural haematoma, ruptured kidney etc. Truck driver said he hit the bullbar in the center and somehow got thrown to the side either from the front or underneath.
He came from an upstanding family of dope heads (according to the insurance assessor). They seemed to express little gratitude for his (totally free) medical emergencyc are, plane evacuation, intensive care, surgery and rehab. (let alone my emergency help. A month or so later his brother was hit by a car while running away after robbing a shop.

Some years back I was cycling back from Southampton to London (about 85 miles) down the A3 (nasty road) when I was side-swiped by a spinning empty 4-tonne box van. I remember hearing an odd noise, looking over my shoulder, seeing the van and thinking, "That's odd"...

Next thing I wake up in a shallow pond the other side of a hedge about 10 metres from the road, thinking "arms? ok. Legs? ok" etc. when a woman comes charging through the hedge and says:

"We were in the car following and saw everything - I'm an A&E consultant and my husband is a JP (a type of judge)". The lorry driver was horrified... done up like a kipper...

Luckily, I wasn't badly hurt, but the trucking company bought me a new hand-built custom road bike with all the Campag bits I'd always wanted, and settled my other claims without a murmur...
