hmm... looks like nanoengineered BiTe may be the next silicon replacment.
is it just me or do some of these properties look very much like what you might see in a superconductor?
one of my "pet theories" is that superconductivity may exist well above room temperature as an atomic level thickness effect between two different structured compounds (perhaps a Type 1 and Type 2 superconductor) due to an effect very much like a bandgap where the electrons end up in an "impossible" state and are unable to escape except as Cooper pairs.
(based on P.Chu's theory of interface superconductivity)
various scientists have fleetingly seen near room temp. effects in compounds including silver lead tin oxide as well as LiBeH (and others) so its not so far fetched.
i also wondered if you could generate this same effect by ultrasonic excitation of an existing Type 2 superconductor to set up standing waves between it and a hard (diamond?) surface. the idea here is that for very brief time periods the structure is distorted reversibly causing similar effects to enormous pressure without said pressure being applied constantly..
