I do know of some common cases of electronic scams (particularly counterfeiting), but I am currently unable to point out any very specfic examples such as yours.

I did hear of several thousand "Toshiba" laptops being recalled; they were all fake and as a result failed to function properly.

Then, of course, there is the well-known counterfeit battery issue. I have encountered two fake batteries, one of which was for my cellphone and the other for a laptop. The cell phone battery overheated, while the laptop battery held nowhere near its stated capacity of 4800 mAh.

These are just a few minor examples that I know.

As an electricain, we are told of counterfeit house circuit breakers which is a bigtime scam. If a circuit breaker is made in a foreign country the temptation seems to be use the licensed casement to make breakers with inner critical parts that wont pass the tests needed for export to the countries with the applied certification labels.

Somehow these get into markets outside the country of manufacture.

Take a look at these two powerbars gotten in an enquirey

One was purchased in a city, the other in a small rural store
far from pesky inspectors

The knockoff uses an illegal mounting screw from ground bond, tiny
wire poor crimps and most of all no internal parts are certified..

But from the outside they look the same.

The entire high-end audio industry is a massive con, speaker cables in particular.

They want about $15k for this particular cable.

James Randi actually has a challenge out to audiophiles.

Having said this, some high-end audio gear looks amazing, it can be thought of as a piece of art that just happens to reproduce music as a side effect. But the suggestion that it sounds better than the cheap stuff is a little suspect.

Yeah, look at those MONSTER cables! I still can't figure out how a inner dielectric material in their audio cables makes any difference whatsoever despite their claims.

Esoteric audio! Now you're talking!
Don't get me started!
That's a whole different level of deceit!

A couple of the worst extremes I remember are 'special' sticky labels and bottles of water. You put them on your speakers etc., even by the mains fuse box and the improvement in clarity will leave you breathless - well, the price certainly will!

Wattgate 381! Unbelievable. First time I've seen that one. Those comments must be from the sellers, they're just too bonkers to believe!
"My apartment was infected with bad electricity from a previous tenant. Clocks ran slow, radios picked up foreign stations, digital tape measures would only read out in "metric". After installing Wattgate 381's, everything's working fine now. Thanks, Wattgate!"

cheesey

Any type of electronic pest propeller is a scam. I had put one inside of my formicarium to see what would happen. It did nothing.

I worked in now defunct speaker manufacturing firm in North Hollywood California (Vega) and "scam" in the audio world is a by-line for normal. The amount of ideas that were stolen from young guys going to school were so common, it was expected.
The slogan for that company was "Loud is beautiful, if it's clean". How do you determine if it's clean? What is clean enough? "Loud"??? (is beautiful?) This was back in the 1970's.
The crap that went on can still get my blood pressure up.. The entire high-end audio industry is a shameless scam!
