In case you cant find a metcal, Aoyue is a great cheap brand.
I use: Link2
The standard tip is fine for through hole and light SMD (I got away with .5mm pitch). Other tips are available for $10.
I have a analog scope, but wish I had a digital. My DMM is:
Link2
IR therometer is awesome, thermocouple I rarely use. The only thing I hate is that the capacitance and inductance meters have to use a plug in port, It wont work through the test leads.

Is this scope fast? And by fast I mean is it like a good ol' analogue scope?
The new cheap digital ones are plenty fast. The only case I have seen that is not great is that they tend to sample a screen full before updating the screen so you don't get a dot moving slowly from left to right at long time bases which is a handy thing if you don't want to know the timebase but just want to adjust it until it looks right. But they got scrolling modes which is a more sensible approach to long timebases.

In general the feeling of the buttons and knobs are very bad compared to old scopes and you don't get the same feedback when adjusting them. The scope may blank out the waveform when you adjust the trigger offsets and show an arrow instead and that sort of nonsense. In return you get all the information you need instantly on the screen without using a slide ruler and google. And no more squinting in the dark hoping to catch that troublesome intermittent signal.

What's the difference between Metcals' PS-900 & SP200?, apart from the price!

I bought a new Rigol DS1052E, the 50 Mhz scope and I am satisfied with its quality and abilities to the price.

It is faster than 10 year old high quality DSOs that you could compare with to buy used, way faster refreshrate, tried 3 different at a HAM fest and was really surprised how much faster the Rigol was.

The feeling of the knobs and buttons is not bad and is also better than I expected from a cheap dso off of ebay.

I have a Owon 20MHz 2 channel...http://cgi.ebay.com/New-OWON-PDS5022S- Digital-Oscilloscope-25Mhz-PDS5022-/250618172697? cmd=ViewItem&pt=BI_Oscilloscopes&hash=item3a5a01d5 19 about 2 years ago and its been fine minus a slight arc over Channel 1 which no longer measures below 500mV but anything above that on Ch1 works fine and Ch2 still works great controls are ok a little glitchy when you rotate the knobs too fast but great 2ch scope for under 300 us.

Okay, I've seen some Weller stations that looks just perfect for my type of abuse. Seems like I am going to save for a while and go for a Agilent scope. A Aoyue hot air rework station and maybe a Agilent stationary meter.

Going to cost, but it is a long time investment.

Once you've used a Metcal, you won't want to use anything else.
There are some advantages to bench meters, some have a much higher than 10M input impedance on all or some ranges, which can be useful.
Also, they don't auto-power off! (Yes, I know you can disable this feature on many hand-held meters, but I always forget)
