A few months ago, I bought for less than £20 a job lot of 6 Mini Instruments Mini-Monitors (GM counters) together with 11 GM-type personal dosimeters in an auction of cast offs from the government atomic energy research centre at Harwell.

Now I've had a bit of luck with another sell-off of ex-Harwell gear.

For £49, I've got 5 assorted Edwards Speedivac oil diffusion pumps, 1 BirVac Pirani gauge control and dispay unit 1 BirVac Penning gauge control and display unit , 2 Edwards ion gauge heads, 2 Genevac Pirani gauge heads, and two Bir-Vac Pirani gauge heads.

I expect all this kit will need quite a bit of refurbishment, but I'm not too bad at that, so if I get half of these purchases up and running I shall have done very well indeed.

Now I'll have to save up to buy a new fore line roughing pump (most likely a Javac A/C pump, which Plazmatron uses in his high vacuum system) and all sorts of bits and pieces to make a working high vacuum contraption. Goodness knows where I shall find room to set it up - on a converted tea trolley perhaps....

Do include a bombarding transformer 15 kV at about 750 mA, on the trolley if you decide to do some neon sign tube making to compliment TC coil projects.

I'll certainly keep that in mind.

I've been thinking more about a trolley, with the vacuum gear on the bottom shelf, and the plat du jour experiment on the top. One of those heavy-weight stainless steel catering trolleys would do very nicely, if I can lay my mitts on one second-hand.
