it appears someone has finally filed a lawsuit against Sony for their removal of the "OtherOS" feature from the PlayStation 3. For those of you who don't know, the OtherOS feature is essentially a bootloader that can support operating systems such as Linux, and even Windows. This was an advertised feature (yes Sony originally had it installed on all PS3s) of the PS3, which was unwillingly removed by Sony after users had purchased the unit with no warning and no ability to refuse.
The PS2 originally had this feature as well via an add-on hard drive, but instead of removing it from the units by an update they simply stopped selling the conversion kits.

good. I still say Sony should restore Linux, apologise to those affected and pay compensation for the inconvenience to those affected. Its the principle of the thing, people *paid* for the PS3 over other consoles (case in point, the black hole simulator) for linux support.

The reason given by Sony was 'disabling the “Other OS†feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.'
Because, hey, it just wouldn't be possible for people who care about that to, i dunno, NOT INSTALL LINUX?! Hell, that's pretty much why i didn't mess with Linux on my "current gaming PC" for years! I didn't want to affect my access to a "broad range of gaming and entertainment content" by messing up my computer, so i only played with Linux on past generation machines. (Linux has come so far in the past 5years that it doesn't worry me anymore. The Win7 eval made me more nervous than my recent eval of Ubuntu Studio lol).
Or are they saying "if we let ANYONE put linux on it could spread viruses like a plague and ruin the PS3s of people who didn't install linux"? Which makes even less sense, but hey, they're the ones with the megabucks. What would a shmuck like me know?
I sure as hell know that the ONLY reason i EVER considered getting a PS3 was to run crazy simulations on it. Good job killing that market sony, ya morons.
