I have always charged my SLAs using an adjustable, regulated power supply. I tend to do constant current at something between 0.25C-0.1C with the upper voltage limit set to 2.4V/cell. The power supply keeps the current from going over the max limit, and it eventually goes into acceptance and float charge towards the end, eventually reaching 2.4V with almost zero current draw.
I have another 7Ah 12V SLA that I keep topped up using a solar panel with a shunt controller, limiting the voltage output to 13.5V maximum. This battery has lasted 4 years of cycling between 75%-100% charge on a daily basis with this method.
