Hi all.
Does anyone have any zinc sulphide scintillator powder spare?

i am only after a relatively small quantity, enough to reliably coat UV curing adhesive spin coated onto a small night vision tube about 3cm across.

may try to make some, the sticking point is getting the ZnS pure enough it seems.

Interestingly, this particular phosphor "quenches" with IR light so it could be used with this in mind (and a very brief IR pulse) to increase sensitivity somewhat by removing any remanent phosphorescence.

regards, -A

At one time it was thought that ZnS was a so-called 'self-activating' phosphor, but it is now understood that this activation is due to trace amounts of univalent zinc ions which form the luminescent centres.

So an impure technical grade of ZnS is more likely to display luminescence than a very pure reagent grade. To work well, a univalent activator, such as silver, must be built into the fundamental lattice. You can't just add it afterwards, like a flavour enhancer in an otherwise tasteless soup.

There are no end of recipes for ZnS phosphors, how to make them glow blue, glow green, how to extend the glow, how to kill it rapidly, and so on. Many of these processes involve prolonged roasting of the ingredients in a crucible at 1000 - 1200 Celsius for activation to occur, and/or the addition of H2S or CO gas (for carbonyl sulphides) on tap, and other hazardous procedures.

Are you hoping to make a spinthariscope for alphas, or something else? I was very taken recently by images of flies' wings taken using an alpha source, a subject that would be very difficult with even the feeblest of soft X-rays, unless it were done in a vacuum, a major palaver!

I have about half a kilo of ZnS knocking around somewhere, and am happy to send you 50g or so, and various Ag salts to use as dopants, but it will be of no use unless you are confident that you have the means, such as a high temperature kiln, to activate it.

Among my other crazy activities as a youth was to make various Zinc-Dust-and-Sulfur pyrotechnics (need paint-grade Zinc dust), and I discovered the zinc sulfide smoke and leftover residue fluoresced yellow-green with a blacklight.
