Hi guys, well after a bit of trouble shooting, I finally have my first Tesla Coil and SSTC, The MiniSSTC reliably working on voltage doubled mains for 330v. I am getting around 7 inch arcs max, and I have played with all different types of IGBT's/Mosfet's to see which work the best. So far I find the IRFP460c's to work the best and get least warm. My Coil specs are: 5inch's tall, wrapped around sch40 4inch Diameter PVC, Primary is 12 AWG 4 turns. Calculated Secondary Fres is 540khz. Probably the reason why the mosfets don't get warm since they dont mind being driven at high frequencies as much as IGBT's.
Now that it is working, I am trying to find ways to improve it, first off, I figure I should be getting a bit longer then 7 inch arcs, since Steve shows his as having 8inch with just rectified 120v. On my v doubler, it uses 6 photo flash 120uF capacitors, 3 equal one side of the vdoubler. So any Ideas? Do I need a bit more capacitance or what?
Another thing, I would like to Audio Modulate it, and I thought you could just put audio on pin 5 of the interrupter but no such luck, it creates a small arc but with lots of fuzziness noise. I am not really sure if this can be Audio Modulated or what.
To finish off here is the coil running with a topload of a plastic water bottle covered in AL foil with a break out point. (btw that music in the background is not mine! ) Thanks, Mike
