Its been turbulent...most are pretty pissed off, and almost all are outraged at this violent event. Its my first semester here but I dont recall Joseph making or doing anything controvercial. It seemed to be a random slur and stab attack. I made sure I was the first to get the yellow ribbbons they offered on Friday before the rally, which I also attended, there is a second person still wanted, hopefully the court trial will pin down the details for the public record. However, there are things you wont hear in the media, or from the school admin, it looks like racial tension is up, as there were racial slurrs on election posters for A.S. elections two weeks before this stabbing, I wonder if the nearby Butte College kids are coming here to deface and vandalise our stuff? But that is just speculation on my part. Its mainly alcohol-drug related date rape or hazing that we worry most about and that is mostly caused by those you know, not random perps, or so they said in the mandatory saftey class I was required to attented 5 weeks ago. this racial stuff is new and rising in frequency...its very scarry, im a white guy but i fear there may be more violence to come. My black friends, and i dont fear for our safety, but everyone seems more on alert.
This article is from our school newspaper, but u can trust it, and the same facts have been reported independenlty by other wire, print, and tv news, I dont trust our admin's motives, they may be minimisizing the numbers to keep the school looking good for the feds. Our local Chico fire, police are good or excellent, the CSU police I dont trust.

A.S. President Joseph Igbineweka, 23, was released form the hospital Monday after being stabbed multiple times at 2:17 Sunday morning while walking down Warner Street near West Sacramento Avenue.
Officers responded and arrested Barry Sayavong, a 19-year-old Butte College student of Laotian descent, at 2:19 a.m. on the corner of West Sacramento and Citrus avenues, according to the Chico Police Department.
Sayavong, who has a criminal record, was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide and a hate crime, said Chief of Police Mike Maloney.
On his way back from walking a friend home from a party, two men approached Igbineweka and started shouting racial slurs at him, Igbineweka said.
After trying to walk away from the situation, the two men continued to follow Igbineweka down the street and one of them threatened to shoot him, Igbineweka said.
“He was pointing something at my face like he was going to shoot me,†Igbineweka said. “But I looked and it wasn’t a gun.â€
The second suspect left the scene after trying to fight with Igbineweka, prompting him to defend himself, Igbineweka said.
“I knocked him really hard,†Igbineweka said. “He was out.â€
After seeing the other man get hit, Sayavong allegedly approached Igbineweka and attacked him with a knife, Igbineweka said.
“He was stabbing me any way he could,†Igbineweka said.
The confrontation was unprovoked, Igbineweka said.
He suffered wounds to his neck, chest, abdomen and arm, Igbineweka said. The worst injury he suffered was a cut to his forearm.
“It was sliced,†Igbineweka said. “You could see the meat, you could see the blood coming out.â€
After the stabbing, Mike Whitcraft, a Chico State student, approached Igbineweka and used his T-shirt to stop some of the bleeding, said Sgt. Rob Merrifield of the Chico Police Department.
Igbineweka has lost some feeling in his pinky and ring fingers because of the cut to his arm, he said. However, he doesn’t expect any long-term damage.
After the Chico Police Department was notified, officers stopped a group of four subjects matching suspect descriptions, Maloney said.
As officers drew their guns on the suspects, two ran off, Maloney said. The two suspects who did not run were both taken into custody. Sayavong was arrested on suspicion of being connected to the assault and the other subject was arrested for parole violation.
Though officers were unable to locate the knife used in the stabbing that morning, a nearby resident found a 2 1/2-inch folding knife with blood on it, which is thought to be the weapon that was used, Merrifield said.
Igbineweka, who was born in Nigeria but moved to the U.S. when he was 15, thinks people should be able to walk down the street without fearing attack, regardless of what race they are, he said.
“I was nervous, but I wasn’t going to back down,†Igbineweka said. “I’m not scared of him anymore. I indicated to him that I wasn’t scared of him the first time.â€
Medics treated Igbineweka on the scene before taking him to Enloe Medical Center, Maloney said.
“I would say he’s very lucky,†he said. “We are very fortunate in this case that so many people stepped up to help Joseph.â€
Violent crimes are up 3 percent from last year, Maloney said.
“The incident itself is very disturbing,†he said. “We are a different community than we were a long time ago.â€
A unity rally will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Commons in response to Igbineweka’s assault.

Thanks for the info.
Chico State has had its ups and downs, there was a rape/murder in the mid seventies tied to the Pioneer Week festivities (drunken beer brawls actually), a suicide when someone leaped out of an upper part of Butte Hall (I think that's the tall one), on-campus riots, etc. I wonder if the perps were just looking for trouble and didn't know who they were assaulting. Oh well. Take care, I think things will quiet down.
