Hello everybody.
If you hook up your plasma speaker to a plasma globe, would you still hear some music?

I build my plasma speaker at school, and well, it is finally finished.
But my teacher is afraid someone might be stupid enough (read, interested :P) to touch one of the leads.
So I had to come up with a solution to make the speaker fool proof, and i wanted to find a solution to get rid off any ozone created by the "spark".
I thought a plasma globe might solve the problem.
Many thanks!

You're not going to hear much through a glass plasma globe. Sounds like your teacher is concerned about safety. In that case, just enclose your plasma speaker inside a cage of mesh wire (available from any hardware or home improvement garden center).

Plasma globe would also work, but you're defeating the purpose of your plasma speaker.

A cage of mesh wire might be a good idea^^ The cage should be connected to a proper ground, right?
But that still leaves the Ozone problem. Is there any way i could minimize the ozone production?

I read something about using a hydrogen and oxygen flame, to make ionized "air". This way the only byproduct would be water. Could this maybe work?

I believe ozone is only dangerous in high levels. Open a window in the room it is in. Ozone can be beneficial in small amounts.
As for the wire cage, you will want it connected to a good ground.

As for dealing with stupidity, youll want a good lawyer. wink

Ozone and other nasty gases produced by sparks are not something to ignore. The irritation in your nose, eyes, and even ears can last for several days after just a few minutes of experimentation with high-voltage devices. Ventilation is an absolute necessity. I don't know of any efficient way to avoid ozone formation, other than the elimination of oxigen from where the sparks are produced.

For something small like a plasma speaker arc, just a simple fan should be enough. I've found that the ozone is mostly produced when the arc doesn't have a return path, and just sits there hissing.

If the current is increased such that it a hot arc, i have found that I can not smell the ozone. Perhaps it burns it up?

Or does the voltage drop too much to create ozone? But then, even if the voltage was somehow high enough, saw 12kv, would it just be burnt up?

I don't believe the Ozone created by the flyback stays ozone very long. In fact most of this type of Ozone stays at a lower altitude and is a component in smog or pollution. I think I have read somewhere that it's unstable and the O3 eventually goes back to regular oxygen.

yes the half life of Ozone dependes on many factors, some accellerate its decomposition, others lengthen time need to decompose.
