I'm going to be in and around San Jose for a week early in May. I live in a tiny town where it is pretty hard to find good hobby/electronic sources. Whenever I go into a city I look for anything I can find on the scavenger level. I've never been to San Jose, however, so I was wondering if anyone knows of great electronic store? Are there any hamfests or hobby flea markets? I'll be there may 9 to 18. Also, any good scrap yards to find fun stuff?

Thanks!

Last time I was in the area for a few days in 2001 there was a place called "Weird Stuff Warehouse", in Sunnyvale. They had a lot of stuff (weirdly enough), I remember buying a couple rolls of Kapton tape there.

cool, can you pm me please as i am in the market for some Gen 1 night vision tubes (i am attempting to build a homemade scintillation viewer)

if you find some large EL sheets i am after those too.

interestingly EL *may* be useable as a scintillator depending on the chemistry

Have fun at ISEF!

Surplus stores are in decline, but you might like to visit
Halted Specialties
Weird Stuff Warehouse
Triangle Machinery - if they're still in business. (Vacuum hardware etc.)
Anchor Electronics - ordinary electronics stuff
Alltronics (down in Morgan Hill - might have no stockroom open to customers)
Duniway Stockroom (vacuum parts dealer - no reason for personal visit except for will-call to save on shipping charges)
Monthly electronics flea market at De Anza College - May 8 frown
at which Halted and Alltronics are regular vendors
Maker Faire Bay Area - May 22 & 23 frown
SIMS Metal (real close) and Alan Steel - metal materials, not electronic stuff
My garage (just kidding)
Computer History Museum, Mountain View
Tech Museum (right in downtown SJ)
A Frys Electronics store just for the experience, not to find/buy something you can't get at home.

Maybe you can get a tour of satellite development facilities at Lockheed
or NASA-Ames, perhaps with other ISEF attendees.
Might be problematic for non-US citizens.

PM me & I can advise by phone. There are may local companies that make semiconductor
fab equpment with vacuum chambers. Meivac is across the street from my day job
& I know somebody there might be able to get you a little tour.

Wow thanks for the list!!! Looks like I'll have my hands full....
I'm planning on the tech museum as it is right next to the convention center but I'll keep my eyes open for other tours when the list comes out. If I have time I would love to get a tour of Meivac, I'll let you know when the time comes.

Man, I'm sick at the dates of those flea markets!!! AAAAA... I can't go early as my high school graduation is the 9th. Oh well

And thanks for the good wishes!
