The eruption hurled a bright coronal mass ejection into space. The expanding cloud could deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field around April 15th. NOAA forecasters estimate a 35% chance of polar geomagnetic activity when the CME arrives.

Its a little late right now. The Kp index peaked on April 12th to about 6. You probably need greater than 6 to see anything in temperate zones (40deg Lat).

Yeah there was a smallish CME that hit the Earth a couple days ago. This one, were it aimed more directly at us, would probably do a tad bit more than a Kp of 6. The Sun has certainly perked up over the last 3 months. Here's hoping the trend continues.

On the flip side, "wrapping your laptop in chicken wire" wouldn't help IMHO. The level of radiation needed to affect a laptop etc would be so high that the entire side of the planet facing the CME would receive a lethal dose of radiation in seconds. Think 50 Hiroshimas per square mile level.
Needless to say, having a toasted laptop would be the least of your concerns.
On the other hand, if you were down a mine or something (cough nuclear submarine /cough) you might barely make it.
Just feel sorry for the poor people on the ISS, they would literally glow in the dark.
