I was messing with the coil and my tungsten breakout point fell off (its goes on the topload with a magnet) and broke in half, so i put it back on thinking it was all good, it probably doesn't need to be pointy, and boom, a flash of light from the base blowing up the control logic and my panel meter. i replaced all the logic chips but now it doesn't want to make nice sparks. So now i'm turning to you guys for some insight.

it is based off the feed back and logic part of Steve's driver just with big driver chips

one of the apparent problems is that it doesn't want to do its thing during all of the on time. i replaced all the diodes between the CT and inverter chip but that isn't it.

top is signal to one of the gate drivers
bottom is feed back CT

here is a weird thing, the inverter looks like it isn't doing what its supposed to
top is CT feed back
bottom is H bridge output at around 24 volts

here is half of the bridge's GDT signal, is the sine action at the beginning normal?

i am temporarily solving my scope problems by borrowing one, my school lets you check out lab stuff, fun times. these digital scopes are a whole new world. my computer doesn't have a serial port so i have to literally screen shot it

umm in the first scope SS the output of the CT looks way wronge it should look just like a nice primary current ringup maybe something is wronge with your CT? I have had many many problems with CTs in the past.

It should look a little more like this

First thing, is what do you mean by "big" driver chips?

Some of the high current gate drivers, such as 15A IXYS drivers, have UVLO lock-out built in. So if you're Vcc inside the chip droops, the chip will shutdown. This can be remedied by proper bypassing and layout.

I suspect your issues are probably bad layout and bypassing of the high current gate drivers, assume you are using something more exotic than the typical TC442x or UCC3732x commonly used.

Make a 50% duty oscillator about the freq of your secondary with 5v output, and feed that into the circuit. then separately test every individual circuit on the board. That always helps me!

i'm using 4 TC4421 chips. upon further probing it appears that one or two of them on one side might have died.

update:
i replaced them and now it works again. for now...
thanks for all the suggestions

Oh, those aren't big driver chips and they should be fine for your application. Just make sure you have them properly bypassed. I use a 0.1uF ceramic (closest), and a 10uF tantalum (NOT electrolytic) for bypass on the 9A drivers i use.
