I got a 15A 120V variac from my local swapmeet... I forgot to check that it was 60Hz though. I don't know what I'm going to do with it.

Was it 400 Hz? If so, keep it. There are 28 Volt DC to 120 VAC 400Hz rotary power convertors out there. Mine is 2.5 KW. Places that trade in used aircraft parts/surplus may have some. Half the far Northern junkyard fleet of bush pilots uses that stuff.
