Thought I would post how the competition went- We got second place in the competition, but the other team had the pool to practice in (we had a ice bath tank, so we couldn't really test mobility) and they also had the props so that they could practice the tasks. The H-Bridge in our robot was the only one there- everyone elses was hard wired, and after our practice session, i know why. The compartment didn't stay dry, and the whole bottom of the little PCB board was corroded from the copper, tin and chlorine water. So we ended up hardwiring it so we had 8 conductors going to the robot, plus 1 coax for the camera. It was really cool though that there were two real ROVs there, costing 5,000$ and right around 50,00$. They were quite impressive to watch, and I talked to the guy with the big robot for quite some time about power and stuff. In order to use a thinner bus power wire to the robot, they use the same thing as power lines do- raise the voltage so that I^2*R losses are not as great. They raise the voltage to ~320V, and send it to the robot like that. The motors produce 60lbs of thrust, and the whole assembly draws up to 6kW! I got to drive it two, and that was pretty nifty- everything was based on a Play Station 2 contoller.
