You're not going to find something with that current rating.
The maximum 240vac variac size is typically 28A. This is the industry standard and used in all the giant 3-phase variac stacks, etc...
That said, I do have a 240/280VAC, 28A powerstat variac if you're interested. I have a 3-stack for free (pick-up only), or a powerstat single with knob, although this would be a sale item.
A single 28A variac could be run at 40A for short durations though.

While free is tempting, I don't have three phase.
I have a 240/20@ unit right now. I wonder how much of a difference the 8A will make. How much for the unit and shipping? When you say "short duration", how long are we talking about?
