I imagine that since a LOPT is an isolated form of boost converter, yes it is possible. You can probably take most self-oscillating flyback drivers, and with a little tweaking, use them for a boost converter. Just switch out the gapped ferrite transformer with the inductor+diode+capacitor combination of a boost converter, and determine the best choice for a feedback winding experimentally, perhaps clamping its output so as to improve the gate drive.
Even with that design, though, I'd be tempted to stick some sort of IC in there...

Yes, I did this to make a joule thief type circuit. build an astable two transistor circuit, then use one side of it to feed the base of your boost convert switch.
