IGBT diode current ratings?

I am considering using a full bridge of HGTG20N60A4D's in my upcomming DRSSTC. These are 280A pulse rated and they are fast, off time should be about 100ns.

What worries me is the rated current of the diode is only 80A max. Am I likely to kill the diode in DRSSTC duty?

There is a problem with your link, an "l" at the end.
Otherwise, I would probably go for a different IGBT. In the "Features" part, it lists some REALLY low values... though most of the loses implied there are for hard-switching...
If you don't have them already, you're probably better off using a "tried and true" IGBT, or one whose datasheet won't lead you to post on the forum. =)
(Just to be safe...)

I really don't know what kind of currents the diodes see. As far as I know, they conduct during dead time and after a "bang" to return unused energy to the filter capacitors, so it will probably vary from coil to coil.

I fixed the link. It is just really hard to find a good IGBT that I can actually get from digikey or mouser. I intend to do a full bridge of ixys 60N60 mini bricks if i blow up my to-247 bridge before I get to 3 feet streamers or so.

I would like to find a to-247 or similar case IGBT that is ideally under $10 each and can take maybe 300A peak.

The IGBT that I linked to looks good to me except for the diode current rating. I might just give them a try, they are rated for 280A peak and switch off in about 100ns which seems very good (my coil resonates at 350khz with medium topload).

I think that one of the best TO-247 IGBT is FGH50N6S2D:

Peak current is 240A but I am sure it can withstand 2x the rated current for short pulses, low duty-cycle and perfect zero current switching.

Current in the diodes is not rated but it should meet the current of the IGBT...

It is really fast with only 55ns turn off delay and 70nC of gate charge.

Thanks Luca, I have seen those before and they look very nice. They are $12 each sadly on digikey, and 60N60 minibricks are only $18. I think I might just try with the HGTG20N60A4D's at $6 each, and If I blow those up Ill switch to minibricks.

I wouldn't wast any money on those TO-247s I would go strait to the MiniBlocks, TO-247s just don't have the balls to run in a DR. tongue

I might just do that, digikey has IXGN60N60C2D1 for $18 each, and I have already ordered heatsinks for a bridge of them. I know that these are capable of 400A at least.

I thought I might reach this conclusion, so I went ahead and sent this board to gold phoenix along with a halfbridge, a to-247 full bridge, and some SMPS designs I have been working on.

I guess it depends on what your looking to get out of the TO247 style. This is a TO247 style full H-bridge, with 120Vac input I am using a doubler circuit but it produces decent spark length around 34 inches. I am building a "Block" style H-Bridge for it just for comparison, the input voltage and caps will remain the same.
