Yeah, and you really don't want to be breathing that smoke in either! Burning polyurethane insulation is particularly nasty! cry

I prefer smoking cigars, but each to their own cheesey

I'm not sure if it's the same stuff, but a particular reel of enameled wire that I have gives quite some warning about inhaling the fumes just from soldering! I don't know what the effects of it are.

When you burn polyurethane insulation, the smoke contains cyanide compounds. Toluene diisocyanate or suchlike.

Is it just me or did I hear kids in the background?
Not to be offending or anything, but I don't think kids should be that close to a shorting MOT smoking and eventually catching fire.

When samples were sent to CSA labs (Canadian Standards Association) they wanted to know if stuff dripped flaming liquid or caught fire. To find out they shorted out secondaries and watched it in a draught cupboard. If the device had a fuse, they jumpered that before tests, just like a consumer would do with tinfoil etc.

However if the transformer had intrinsic protection, impedance or thermal cutout, it just prevented fire and smoke.

And after the thing failed, they made sure it hadn't grounded the power line to the external metalwork.

Then we got the samples back with a big red tag "Danger Do Not Operate Until Repaired"

Having grown up around people who thought tossing M-80s into a kiddie pool was good family fun, i fail to see the problem. It's not like they let me toss them or anything, and nothing got tossed unless you were willing to sit down and watch like a well behaved human. I'm assuming similar standards were used in this case. "You kids wanna see some 'fireworks'? Well, sit down and we'll get started." I bet he's so irresponsible, he lets them around a camp fire without a leash on!

Now for the real outrage: he wasted a perfectly good MOT!!! (if it was totally unusable, then I retract my outrage.)

I can't believe how long it was able to keep smoking before totally failing. That's some good safety margins. I mean, good god, if you can't think to unplug your microwave after 10-20secs of that much smoke then you're probably not in the room.

Kinda makes me wish i had a remote for my circuit breakers....

A friend of mine that worked for one of the leading manufacturers of microwave ovens once told me that MOT fires are actually quite common during production line test!

Remember these transformers are made to an absolute minimum of cost, so they aren't the most reliable or sturdy of transformers by a long way! They've barely even got enough copper or iron to do their job properly without constant airflow cooling them.
