Hi all. Finally got around to trying this experiment, and it works well.
the basic plan is loop the conducting thread across the crystal for multiple glowing points, then secure with superglue+baking soda (UV adhesive would also work here) and when everything looks ok epoxy over the top. voila, homemade LED.
Sucky brightness but it works and is stable at 36V@35mA max and lights fine off 9V with just the thread as series resistance.
the forward and reverse voltages differ by about 0.15V so its behaving as an LED in parallel with a resistor it seems.
