Hey guys.

One day i got bored and wanted some time alone, with none of the noises i am always fed up with, such as crying baby, guitar, bass guitar, and yelling. So, i went to take a walk. I started walking further and further, and i ended up on a street right outside of the city limits. Was about 2 miles from home. Well, i had once been on that street and noticed an abandoned trailer kind of thing. Once i went in it, out of curiosity (not well hidden from the very busy street, i stay safe!).

Well, this time i went into an abandoned city bus (extremely old!) that was behind it. This place has been abandoned for many years, the most recent thing i could find was from 1998. I kept looking around. This bus, along with the trailer, are full of useless rusted car parts. Suddenly, i found an 'ignition box'. I suppose it just contains some snubbing caps and a transistor and junk like that. One that i got has an external mounted transistor in the TO-3 package. It is far too old to read any numbers.

Anyway, this was the place i found my first iggy, which was an HEI coil. Knowing i would find more, i looked around. I ended up finding 2 fairly intact distributors with the HEI ignition coil mounted on it, and 4 'typical' ignition coils, as well as a smaller kind that is much older, that i have never seen before.

I picked them all up and found a bucket with a dang ~14 gauge steel handle to put them in. I picked up 3 of the ignition controllers or whatever they are called too. Weighed about 30 pounds, so i walked the couple miles home.

I tested them all to a very high voltage, enough to arc over the HV stand off neck continuously, with sparks starting at about 1.5 inches with a repitition rate of a few tens of Hz, i supposeth. Only one was dead, which was the least expected one... It was one of the HEI's, it has an open primary. That is a project for another day, possibly reviving it by giving it a new primary in some very ghetto way.

Well, her is a pick of the group (with the dead HEI off to the side), and a picture of the odd coil. You cannot see i am sure, but the top plastic part is dry rotten and it has cracks all over the place. The HV was arcing through all of them, it looked pretty cool.

Hehe, i found 2 more HEI coils, and another in the can.

This would make a crazy bank of iggys, if i paralleled all the can types i have. That is 6 iggys tongue.

Now only if i had a good driver...

Arcstarter:

Got a question for you....
* What about a small NST (rectified if need be)? They are oil filled. If steps were taken to prevent the arc from crawling all over aside from where you wanted it - why would you even need a driver other than a break-point-type relay or a SCR/555 type circuit? I was thinking of a bug-zapper - 2Kv - just something with enough voltage to make the step up from a series of 3 coils, etc
