what.. the... feck... ?!!!!!!

Who the hell has the right to do this? This is worse than the credit default swaps thing that bankrupted tens of thousands.

IMHO this should be on the front page guys, with a big flashing banner and "Donate Here".
We are fighting for the future of not only the Geek Group but all US based non profit organisations, 4HV included.

Wow, Duck must be absolutely boiling. Although i doubt this is the whole story, his tale seemed very biased to me. It would take years of meetings and ignoring bills to get to the point where you find orange stickers on your front door. If not, then what the city is doing would be illegal, am i right?

Let's hope this is just a big mistake. Having the Geek Group dissapear like this would be a real shame.

Ideally that would be the case. According to Duck, they sent one letter which was not received, then no further communication till it was stickers on the door and judicial review deadlines on the back taxes had passed.

In the US local governments can have a lot of power over things like this... and many Michigan governments have been hurting financially from the economic downtown.

It's not that uncommon for a municipal tax asessor to be driven by avarice to get some quick bucks for the county by going after someone he thinks may have some extra money tied up in property. It's also not that uncommon for a municipality to exercise imminent domain to seize property for the purpose of building tax-generating enterprise, or sometimes for the very corrupt practice of seizing prime property from a long-term owner to be given to a wealthy and powerful commercial developer who wants it, and they often start these processes by assessing ridiculous taxes.

I don't think there is some ulterior anti-science motive here, just greed.
