Richie, what about the ground traces under the TC4421 and TC4422?

I will post the more critical PCB with the uP and PLL in a short while. This is the one I want to protect the control loop.

You may be able to draw inspiration from parts of this article: http://tunzy.com/download/?47b4782o=299
to shield the different circuits around your PIC. Not that it's so painfully critical, but we are yet to see the layout of your low-side circuitry.

how do I insulate the igbts from the heatsinks and still allow good heat transfer?
These insulators (Thermal - Pads, Sheets "silicone TO-247") from Digikey are an easy way to go. Should you find the thermal resistance of the pads makes operation prohibitive, you know there is yet more efficient design to be done first. tongue

The purpose of insulating the heatsinks is so that you have two fewer large, radiating metal bodies amongst your circuit!

BlackPlasma,

Thanks again. I had already ordered some mica sheets for the to-247 on Ebay. I should be getting 50 of them soon. Only $4.

I will have the PCB for the low-side as soon as I touch it up so as not to completely embarrass myself

Is this better for the inverter section? I tightened the high voltage section, got rid of the boarder and I added a grounding island under the gate drive chips.

Ground-planeing the control PCB and any small-signal stuff is a very good idea.

...but for the power section I would leave the ground plane out for the reasons I mentioned above, and just keep the drive and power sections as far appart as possible. For instance you could rotate your GDT (pulse transformer) a quarter turn anti-clockwise and gain a bit more distance between the drive signal traces and those of the power side electronics.

Thanks. Here is the pcb for the driving circuit board. What I would like to know is if I did well enough ground planing the chips here. At the top is the PLL. At the bottom is the uP. Together they form a control loop. The two critical traces would be pin 2 of the PLL and pin 9 of the uP.

A high voltage signal comes in at the upper left from the tank capacitor, and one comes in from the inverter on the middle left.

The drive signal comes off on the right middle.

FOD3180 is the optocoupler, which is used to isolate the uP. It also converts the 5v uP pwm into a 15v pwm for the PLL.

The IC to the left of the PLL is an ultrafast opamp.
