Hey all, new to the site. new to telsa coils. a classmate had decided to make a tesla coil for our project and we just went at it. we went a little big.... the spark is only about 6". we will cut off the extra wood...
Neon transformer. 9kv @ 30mA
Tank Cap 9.0nf
Primary 1/2" at 1/2" spacing.
Secondary. is either 26 or 28awg. but about 900 turns on 4" pipe.
toroid 7" pie pan surrounded by 4" aluminum ducting.
the white wire is 6awg and the red is 4awg.
the main spark gap is out of tungsten.
Here is the video of the tesla coil at work. Any help is appreciated.

Wow you'se really went all out on this lol. that amount of primary seems unneccasery, and wouldve cost a wee bit much lol :P

we didn't pay for the primary. but where we left the clamp on the primary. that was the strongest spark that we was able to get from it.

I ran your numbers through JAVATC and had to guess a few of them myself from your pictures, but seemed to work out alright. See the attached image.

Everything apears to be in order with your current setup according to the calculations.

Are the MMC capacitors heating up much? fast?

Quenching slash cooling of the sparkgap?

the capacitors doesn't seem to heat up a lot. We only run it for a few seconds. we use the light bulb to see how far the sparks can go. the video was the longest amount of time that we left the coil on. and we ended up making the bulb turn purple and die. so we have no idea why the sparks are so small. other TC generators said the sparks should be about 2'. but we are only getting about 6" max. is the toroid too big? or the amps on the transformer too small? should we have used a smaller pipe for the primary?

Toroid isn't too big.If the caps are ok ,then either tuning problem or the spark gap setting and quenching screw up performance so much .

Get your spark gap off of wood and onto something non-conductive. Wood can be very conductive depending on the moisture content. Do the same for our safety gap.

all I can say is TOO MUCH PRIMARY turns.. reDO calculation with 4-5Turns o primary and adjust primary capacltor LC tank value..

If you are local to me, you can pick up a free 9kv 60ma nst here. A little extra power may help. :)

10 turns is in no way unordinary for a SGTC
