With the relaunch of our company which is ultimately positioned into the educational / science fair kits industry, we are pleased to announce a new program for high school and college students.
The Student Sponsorship Program allows us to give back to the 4HV community by providing free parts for your next high voltage or electronics science project. If you need some hard to find parts, discretes, semiconductors, ICs, wire, etc... for your next science project, we will do our best to match up parts to your request. The only exception is due to high cost of power semiconductors, we cannot offer high power MOSFETs, IGBTs, or magnet wire.
Requirements: - Middle School / High School or College Student with valid Student ID (or even long-standing 4hV members on a case-by-case basis) - You will be responsible only for shipping costs (flat rate box or 1st class envelope) - Active 4HV member with at least 25 posts

hi, I am working on my High School Senior Project (a mini-sub, I actually started a thread under projects soon to be updated with hard design specs once I can find good deals on parts)e One of the key parts I will need is either one seven pin Waterproof connector (I am told on this board that the buccaneer's are good, but I can't quite pay for those) or a few smaller pin-count connectors. I may try to make my own connectors, but the main issue is that anything I build has to be serviceable in the field, and not take up too much space (as PVC pipe and threading would) as the electronics enclosure for the mini-sub is a long Ammunition Case (which, as it turns out, is completely water proof and I will beef it up if necessary). The unit is not meant to go more than 100 feet, but likely will never go past 50 as that is going to be the test depth... I am very flexible in what I can get at this point, as I have only made a few parts that are of fixed design. So if I have to get one good to say, 35 feet, I can manage until I get everything else tested

Sounds like a cool project. Wasn't sure at first if you were referring to a mini-subwoofer, but then i realized it was an underwater sub. As far as waterproof connections, i don't really have anything like that. I have different types of D-subs and perhaps a mil-circular style connector or two, but nothing thats waterproof. If you need any electronic parts, i definitely go those though.

I am currently a sophomore in high school, and I am in the planning stage of a new project for the siemens competition ( This project is somewhat like DaJJhman's, but instead it is a autonomous ground (all terrain) vehicle. For this, the major contributing factor to the whole design is the motors. Would you happen to have any mid size motors you could part with (range of 4x 300W, low voltage DC) or any speed controllers (I want to avoid homemade for this due to the high stress function). I am also looking for a ARM JTAG programmer/Debugger and a development board for a mid power ARM processor to run the whole thing. The main sensory feedback is stereopsis (thread in comp sci.), so I am also looking for two similar USB cameras (normal 640x480 resolution works). First post was just made:

there actually is another thing that in the very early stages of my project has proved invaluable, and I will need a lot more: rainbow ribbon wire - like the gray wire used for most ribbon cables, but the color increases visibility (which for an environment in which visibility is key, it would help when testing various devices at low power like lighting LEDs at 1.5V before putting in their place the 24V, 2A bilge pumps!
also, it is a godsend for organizing! - and one of my I/O interfaces has 24 ports, and I plan to make use of ALL of them! Then there is the 20 or so I/O ports on the submarine side of things, so I will have at least 44 I/O connections all using ribbon cables... I have tried to use the gray connections in the past, I nearly went insane doing it!

Sorry. Unfortunately, that stuff is really specialized and not something i have. I actually did have a lot of rainbow colored ribbon cable, but that was thrown out years ago. Most of the stuff i have it mostly discrete components, fiber optics, ICs, transistors, etc...
BTW, if you have I/O ports, i do have D-Sub connectors (which are PCB right angle as well as the mating connectors - solder cup). I have these in 9pin,15pin,25pin, 37pin, and 50pin.

d-sub connections might work, but the gray cable might still be a problem as only half of the connections will goto a board, the others will go into free space - right now I have a few rainbow ribbon Pigtails which use DIP connections (which are very convenient for breadboard prototyping, as well as making more permanant connections which are good enough for testing, maybe I can source a longer amount on eBay sometime soon thanks, if I fond some different component needs I'll be sure to check here!

As you know, I'm a college student. I'm currently trying to be recognized for research opportunity, and what better way than being the only kid on campus with crazy high voltage equipment, like a DRSSTC and other apparatuses of the like?
I don't know much about fiber optics, but I know they are good for DRSSTC environments when you need a long connection for the interrupter. Anything in the way of fiber optics (cables and... the things that interface those cables to the rest of the circuits... heheh) suitable for a DRSSTC would be great!
Also if you have any CD4047 chips lying around, I've wanted to switch my VCOs to those...

Yep, i have a fiber optic transmitter / receiver set for you. Not sure about the CD4047, but i have XR2209 VCOs by EXAR. Contact me via my email (not PM) and we'll set things up.
