who is not secretly dreaming of this skill? As for me, I want to play around with semiconductors in high vacuum but I haven't gotten any further down than 10E-3 mbar (TMP anyone? ) growing diode structures could also be a very rewarding task, since SiC is easy to make into an LED, even mineral samples will do for that. Maybe someone gets a piece of sapphire wafer and tries to grow GaN UV LEDs or visible InGaN LEDs

I've been working around HF for 29 years, I know far better about it's dangers from first-hand witnessing of HF accidents. It was good you included your warning.
In the mid-Sixties, Bell Labs put out a science kit for high school-level kids that allowed one to make their own bipolar transistor. Supplied a silicon wafer fragment, chemicals (dopants probably) and used a 250 watt (I think) heater as a diffusion furnace. Can't remember much else about it, a friend got it. I got the Bell Labs Sun-to-Sound science kit.

Are you thinking about the bell labs solar cell kit? These come up for sale on Ebay from time to time. They used a heater element that screwed into a light socket.

You know, you might be right, I may be wrong, it may have been a solar cell kit. But in my dim recollection of 40+ years ago there was a transistor fabrication kit (I still have the "From sun to sound" kit manual by George Frost, 1961).
