Did you add turns to the primary? My experience has been that MOTs run quite hot at any load. I once used a rewound microwave oven transformer for my chlorate cell, at about 6 volts and some 60 amps. I had it in a coffee can full of oil, with the outside painted black, and the oil still got over 100 C.

I am only draining about 5 amps at 36v. So far it seems to be staying cool. I used 18awg to wind the new coil. I tapped it every few turns at 12/24/36/48v. I have not decided yet if I am going to wind any more wire but there is plenty of room.

Russell: Chlorate cells have SO many variables that would not be present in a simple PS for drawing an arc. The solution will change in a variety of ways on a continuum - demanding more from the transformer/supply. But what's more important is that some designs of MOT's are just better suited for alteration than others. Toshiba made a series of commercial MWO that had a fairly big (2700V) x-former that was "tall" and had a great degree of room to work with. It was a fairly simple matter to access as opposed to some square Chinese x-formers that are so crowded that you're lucky to even get wire to turn tightly without cutting the insulation. MOT's are so common now that the best thing is to collect quite a few & see if a better beginning design is available.
